Paper Quality and Performance
What is the paper weight of The Author notebook?
The Author uses 68gsm Tomoe River paper.
Is the paper coated or uncoated?
The paper in The Author notebook is coated. Coated paper resists ink absorption and reduces feathering, while uncoated paper allows more absorption.
Does the paper have any bleed through or ghosting?
Due to the advanced coating of the Tomoe River paper in The Author notebook, there is high resistance to bleed through, even with BBB nibs and highly saturated inks. The use of a 68gsm Tomoe River paper over the 52gsm, means that ghosting is kept to a minimum. Both sides of the paper in The Author notebook can be written on without issue.
How well does the paper resist feathering?
You won't experience any feathering with The Author notebook. The coating ensures that fountain pen lines stay crisp and clear.
Is the paper smooth or textured?
The paper in the Author notebook delivers an ultra smooth writing experience, with just the right amount of tooth to give you complete pen control.
Is the paper acid-free or archival quality?
The paper in The Author notebook is acid free, which means it resists yellowing and degradation over time.
Is the paper white or cream?
We use white paper in The Author notebook, so the paper doesn't 'tint' your fountain pen inks.
Compatibility with Inks
How quickly does the ink dry on the paper?
Coated papers always have longer drying times than uncoated papers, however the coating on the paper in The Author notebook has been designed to keep dry times to an absolute minimum. We include a sheet of blotting paper inside every Author, should you need to close the notebook in a hurry.
How well does the paper show shading and sheen?
The paper in The Author notebook will bring out the subtle variations in ink colour and sheen. It's something the notebooks are famous for.
Is the paper suitable for shimmering or pigmented inks?
Absolutely! The more unique the ink properties, the more the paper will allow them to shine through.
How can the paper of The Author notebook be so thin, yet handle fountain pen ink so well?
The Tomoe River paper used in The Author notebooks is legendary when it comes to handling wet inks. The paper, while only 68gsm in thickness, has a special coating which makes it very ink resistant. This allows it to show off the shading and sheening qualities of your favourite inks without any feathering or bleed through, while ensuring the notebook stays nice and slim and comfortable to write in.
